CANSKATE Programs
Program Description
CanSkate Program
CanSkate is Skate Canada's learn-to-skate program for beginners that teaches fundamental movements and basic skills. There are 7 stages (badges) to this program. Stages 1-5 are taught on CanSkate and stages 6 & 7 are taught on Pre-Junior only.
Each class includes: a 15 minute warm up, a 30 minute group lesson with a professional coach (maximum 8 skaters per coach), and a 15 minute cool down.
Eligibility - Must be 4 years old on first skating day.
Pre-School
This program introduces the fundamentals of skating to very young children. A professional coach is on the ice at all times. Sorry, parents are not allowed on the ice.
Eligibility - age 3 and up
Beginner Elite
This program allows skaters to move through the CanSkate program at an accelerated pace. The number of applicants is very limited, thus allowing more ice per skater.
It includes a 15 minute group warm-up with a professional coach. The skater must have his/her own coach to be on this session. The parent/guardian is responsible for acquiring/paying for this coach. See the coach list on next page.
Eligibility - working on stages 3- 7.
Pre-Junior
This session helps toward a smooth transition from the CanSkate program to the "Junior" level, the first level of the STARSkate program.
Each session includes 60 minutes of group lessons with a professional coach.
Eligibility - Must be at least 4 years old; Stage 6 & 7 only.
Tips for Parents
What to Bring to Each Class...
CSA Approved Hockey Helmet - Hockey helmets are mandatory, according to City of Toronto by-laws. Bicycle and multi purpose helmets will not protect your child properly and are not acceptable.
Properly Fitted Skates - Whether your child is wearing hockey or figure skates, it's important they fit properly. Skates that are too small, too big or lack ankle support will inhibit the skater's progress.
Sharp Skates - Hockey and figure skates require different sharpenings. All-purpose sharpening for figure skates will meet the needs of your child. Skates should be sharpened at least twice a year.
Well-Maintained Skates - Skaters should wear guards while off the ice. This prevents the blades from damage caused by chipping and rust. Remove guards and wipe blades thoroughly after each use. Remember not to store skates with guards on as this will cause the blades to rust.
Gloves/Mitts - The rink is cold so remember to bring at least 1 pair of warm gloves each day and have a back up pair in case they get wet. Put a few pairs of gloves in the skating bag at the beginning of the season and you won't have to remember to bring them each time.
Pants/Jackets - To keep your child warm, snow pants or windbreaker pants over long pants are recommended. Sweaters and turtlenecks or a winter jacket on top should be sufficient. Try to avoid clothing that is too bulky, restrictive or not waterproof.
Patience! - We want every child to enjoy skating and we recognize that each child learns at his/her own pace. Try not to compare children. If you're concerned about the progress of your child, please feel free to speak to our CanSkate Coordinator.
What Happens After CanSkate...
Once your child has earned all 7 badges, she/he can move on to the STARSkate Program, Skate Canada's program for skaters wishing to develop figure skating skills in one or more of the following disciplines: Free Skating, Dance, Skating Skills and Artistic.
