STAR 1 - 5 is designed to introduce skaters of all ages to the 5 disciplines in figure skating. Skaters will learn the basics for each discipline that will serve as a foundation for continued growth in all areas of figure skating. The disciplines are: Skills, Freeskate, Dance, Artistic and Synchronized skating.

STAR 6 - Gold is designed for skaters who completed the STAR 1-5 Program. This program builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.

Unique in Canada, this program is offered in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters in the STAR 1-5 and STAR 6-gold programs have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Assessments through a nationally standardized assessment system as well as compete at STAR 1 - 4 Series or Provincial Series for STAR 5 and up.

Disciplines of Figure Skating

Skills:
Skating skills are the foundation of skating. They include the development of turns in figure form, development of power and control through skills exercises and the development of field moves. (Ex Spirals, Ina Bauer)

Freeskate: Freeskate is one of the most recognisable disciplines of skating. Freeskate is broken down into 2 areas. Elements and Programs.

ELEMENTS: includes the development of jumps and spins in isolation.

PROGRAMS: includes the development of program components and element success in a performance situation.

Dance: Inspired by ballroom dancing, Dance includes the development of proper skating technique while promoting timing, accuracy, musicality and athletisim through pattern dances to all your favourite rhythms.

Synchro: Synchronized Skating includes the development of synchro skating elements through a variety of skating skills and teamwork

Artistic: Artistic includes the development of movement, creativity, projection and interpretation through programs.

STAR 1 -5 Assessments
STAR 1 -5 is designed to provide assessment opportunities that occur on a regular training session during the regularly scheduled lessons for the skater. This removes barriers and encourages solid development that aligns with the skater’s rate of progress versus scheduled assessment days. All STAR 1-5 assessments are assessed by a certified Coach assessor.

What’s next:

After Skaters have successfully completed the STAR 1- 5 program. They will have the choice of either continuing on in the STAR program and start working on STAR 6 – GOLD or they may enter on to the Podium Pathway. (Skate Canada’s Competitive Program)

STAR 6 - Gold Assessments
Skaters in STAR 6 - Gold will be assessed during a scheduled assessment day by a certified coach assessor assigned by Skate Ontario.
